The last road you take to the parking lot is a dirt road. It is roughly 3.5 miles long. There is a misleading sign that says 4WD vehicles beyond this point when you turn on to the road, but you'll be fine taking it in a car. I did this in my two-door sports car with absolutely no issues or worries. The road is well maintained and easy to follow. Mecca Hills Wilderness / Painted Canyon / Ladder Canyon Hike At the top, the trail continues up the side of the hills to the adjoining trail that skirts the top edge of Painted Canyon. After exiting the slot canyon, take the trail to the right up the slope to the edge of Painted Canyon. Once at the top, take the trail to the left and follow it across the mesa until it slopes down into Big Painted Canyon to the right.
